How Spelling Bee Scoring Works

The NYT Spelling Bee challenges you to build words from 7 letters, always including the center letter. Four-letter words score 1 point. Five-letter and longer words score 1 point per letter. Pangrams — words using all 7 letters at least once — earn a 7-point bonus on top. Genius requires 70% of the day's total possible points. Queen Bee means you found every valid word.

SpellingBeeFinder finds every valid word in under a second, shows your maximum possible score, calculates the exact Genius threshold, and labels every pangram so you spot it immediately.

Tips to Reach Genius Every Day

TIP 01
Start with the center letter as your anchor. Every valid word must contain it — build outward from there.
TIP 02
Sweep suffixes: -ING, -ED, -ER, -NESS, -TION turn one base word into three or four valid entries.
TIP 03
Hunt the pangram early. Look for 7+ letter words ending in -TION, -MENT, -LING, or -NESS with the center letter inside.
TIP 04
Repeated vowels signal rare words. Three of the same vowel in the hive almost always means unusual entries worth finding.

A pangram uses all 7 letters at least once and earns a 7-point bonus on top of its letter count. Finding the pangram is usually the key to reaching Genius rank. Most daily puzzles contain exactly one pangram. Our solver labels all pangrams with a star so they stand out immediately in results.
Genius requires 70% of the total possible points for that day's puzzle. The exact threshold changes daily. Our solver shows the maximum score and exact Genius cutoff at the top of every result set so you know precisely how many more words you need to find.
Valid words must be at least 4 letters, include the center letter, and use only the 7 given letters which can repeat. Proper nouns and hyphenated words are excluded. Four-letter words score 1 point, longer words score 1 per letter, and pangrams earn a 7-point bonus on top.
