How a Spelling Bee Solver Works
The mechanics are straightforward. Our solver checks a 167,000-word dictionary of valid NYT Spelling Bee words — excluding proper nouns, hyphenated words, and obscure terms the NYT editors reject. When you enter your 7 letters, the solver runs every word in the dictionary through three filters:
- Length: the word must be at least 4 letters long
- Center letter: the word must contain the required center letter (the amber hexagon)
- Letter set: every letter in the word must appear in your 7 available letters, which can be used as many times as needed
Words that pass all three filters appear in your results. Pangrams — words that use all 7 letters at least once — get an amber star. Point values are calculated automatically: 1 point for 4-letter words, 1 point per letter for longer words, plus 7 bonus points for every pangram.
